By Stimulating Imagination<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picture books provide a multi-sensory experience that stimulates a child’s imagination. While reading together, an educator and a child are provided time to survey the page and fully immerse themselves in the story through both text and pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By Strengthening Empathy & Understanding<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another benefit of picture books is the capacity for building empathy and compassion. Quality illustrations have the ability to communicate relatable emotions to the reader – making it easier for a child to understand a character or situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By Improving Memory & Reading Comprehension<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children gain confidence through talking about what they see on the page. They can discuss the story as the events unfold and improve memory of the story through engaging multiple senses – sight (text & pictures) and sound (reading out loud). Improved memory of the story can lead to increased understanding and reading comprehension, thus instilling more confidence in their own ability to read!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The choice of which picture book to read with your student is critical for enhancing the learning process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are a few elements to look for when selecting a picture book:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25cf  A book that contains high quality literature. High-quality children\u2019s literature that contains authentic characters, realistic problems, and possible resolutions validates  a child\u2019s emotions while offering models for managing strong emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25cf  A book with a great plot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25cf  A book with wise lessons or ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25cf  A book with well-constructed sentences. If possible, with conversations that a child may encounter in their own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25cf  A book where the main character is well developed and understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25cf  A book that is fun and engaging for your child!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children gain more from stories that are personally engaging and include elements listed above. Learning from literature is a wonderful way to teach character to children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
